one of my favorite ???% headcanons is that it looks so dark because it absorbs all the energy it can from its environment, and that happens to include all of the light that hits it, which means that in-universe, rather than an ominous shadowy figure, it’s more like somebody ripped a mob-shaped hole in reality and you’re left staring into the empty void beyond
